// THE TEAM
We're a Friendly & Talented Team of Professionals!

Kim Skimmons

Web Designer, Systems Analyst, Programmer, Trainer

I’ve been creating websites for nearly 20 years and Wild Apricot sites for 9 years.

I’m an accomplished programmer (C++, C#, VB, Java, others), IT consultant, business/systems analyst, trainer, documentation specialist, and a bunch more stuff.

I have 2 specialties:

  1. Designing organized, intuitive Wild Apricot websites that work for you.
  2. Explaining things in plain English.

Lastly, I also love getting young people excited about writing code and have taught and tutored programming.

Holly

Greeter/Reception,
Best Friend

She’s not much of a conversationalist, but you won’t find a warmer, wetter or waggier greeting anywhere in Washington.

Princess Chloe

Princess Chloe

Royal Mistress of the Household

Our newest team member, Princess Chloe was rescued from the wilds of North Carolina before finding her way into our hearts.

She’s the office cleaning staff, always ensuring my desk is free from unattended pens, highlighters, flash drives, and other small, shiny and oh-so-interesting objects.

You!

My Client

My clients are always part of the team. I recognize and value your importance in the design process. No one knows your organization like you do.

Qualifications

I've been working with Wild Apricot since 2008, first as a customer and then, because I loved it so much, as a Wild Apricot Partner.

I've personally worked on dozens and dozens of Wild Apricot websites.

From experience I know the ins and outs of Wild Apricot, and know the best ways to implement it quickly and effectively.

Lastly, I'm not in this just to make a quick buck. I genuinely care about my Wild Apricot clients because I've been in your shoes many times through my own volunteer work, and I know what you go through as a responsible volunteer. I'll always give you a fair and honest assessment of the work to be done.

    Flex Academies After School Programs

This was a new website design for a company that provides after school clubs to K-8 schools. The primary audience — PTA leaders — needed to see a site that quickly answered the main questions in their minds:  (1) What is Flex?  (2) How much does it cost?  (3) How does it work?  (4) What kinds of classes are there?  (5) Security.  Being seasoned PTA leaders ourselves, we had deep understanding of these needs and were able to design a clean, modern site that succinctly answered those questions to remove mental barriers and generate more calls to Flex from prospective customers.

This is the Wild Apricot redesign of the original Joomla site I created a few years prior. The move to Wild Apricot enabled the ever-changing volunteers to make updates quickly and easily with no technical skill, something that was not realistic before.

More importantly, automating their annual membership sign-ups and renewals has resulted in significant, sustained gains in their membership roll with far, far less effort.

This Wild Apricot site is jam-packed with all sorts of capabilities that used to take volunteers hours upon hours to perform manually. Everything from collecting online membership dues and donations, an online “spirit wear store,” email blasts, online event registrations, staff grant applications, a members-only area, and more.

Psychotherapy

Redesign, WordPress, content organization, graphic design

Overview

This project was a site replacement of their aging website. I replaced their static HTML site with a WordPress site that is warm, welcoming and non-intimidating. Many of their prospective clients are initially hesitant to pick up the phone, so I wanted to project a comfortable, open, easy approach. We chose warm colors, plenty of white space, and quality images that reflect the types of clients the practice sees.

321 Firehouse

Redesign, WordPress, Logo

Overview

The owner of this historic property asked us to design an informational website that she could use to publicly document the progress of her conversion from a dilapidated farm firehouse outbuilding to her family residence. The property is located in an architecturally traditional neighborhood, so she wanted the site to reflect that. Most importantly, she wanted an easy way to use a blog for up-to-the-moment news. We suggested using Facebook and integrating that into her website so that she could eliminate the double-blogging that she had been doing. In addition, she needed a way to highlight vendors, charities, and media articles.

Dispute Resolutions

HTML website, maintenance

Overview

This website, for Creative Dispute Resolutions LLC, provides an online directory of legal mediators and arbitrators in the Washington, DC area.  It’s an older HTML site that we maintain for the client. Every few months we update the site with new mediators and news items.

We considered migrating it to something more modern such as WordPress, but ultimately recommended against that because:

1.    The current site works quite well for the intended audience.
2.    There was not a compelling business reason to justify the cost of switching.

Lesson:  Change for the sake of change isn’t always the best decision.

// TESTIMONIALS
Don't take my word for it, read what my clients have to say :)
  • Kim Skimmons of Sister Webs has been extremely helpful and thorough in implementing and updating our organization’s Wild Apricot website.  While the Wild Apricot system has its limitations, Kim has successfully worked around these to produce a product that is professional in appearance, functional for our members and at a reasonable cost to our non-profit.

Deanna Smith Kilgour, Western Association for College Admission Counseling (WACAC)

  • CFTC is a grass-roots, volunteer women’s cancer non-profit, providing emergency financial and emotional support to women in MD, VA, and the District of Columbia. Kim (‘Sisters Web Design Studio’) has been invaluable to our organization by redesigning our website which allows us to make most site updates ourselves and continues to serve as our webmaster. Thanks Kim.

Clancy Kress, President, Critters For The Cure

  • There is no doubt in my mind that the Flex Academies’ web site would not be as successful without the hard work of Kim Skimmons.  Kim took the time to get to know our business, discuss our needs, and then made sure the web site reflected our company.  Therefore, our thanks continue to go Kim’s way and we are happy to send any other business owners looking for web site design and construction Kim’s way.

    Joshua Chernikoff, Founder, Flex Academies

  • It was a pleasure working with Kim. We completely redesigned our website from top to bottom. Throughout the design process, Kim was patient and receptive to hearing my thoughts and ideas. Her creativity gave us a final product that we are very happy with. Our website now reflects a true representation of everything our hotel has to offer. I would recommend her without hesitation and look forward to working with her in the future.

    Mike Smith, The Engleside Inn
